Director of Corporate Sustainability

The Director of Corporate Sustainability reports to the Strategy and Analysis Department and oversees and coordinates the environmental, social and governance (ESG) programs for MAA. Primary responsibilities include collaborating across the company to develop, implement, analyze, and report on ESG initiatives. The successful candidate will embody and work to reinforce MAA’s Core Values. Those values include:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directs and manages the ESG functions and staff/consultants, including selection, development, and performance management.

  • Collaborates across MAA to identify areas of opportunity to develop or advance ESGinitiatives. Supports ESG-related areas and special projects.

  • Facilitates the research and analysis of corporate sustainability programs and projects as well as traditional sources for new data sets, key reports, and analytic proceedings.

  • Implements, monitors, and reports performance metrics to demonstrate achievement of corporate responsibility objectives. Explores alternative media, early adopters, and unconventional indicators to support corporate bench-marking and environmental regulatory compliance efforts.

  • Supports MAA’s ESG initiatives and disclosures, including working with a cross-functional team to collect, organize and analyze data for the annual sustainability reports.

  • Develops and maintains internal control processes to validate metrics and data in ESG disclosures.

  • Responds to ESG risk assessments and questionnaires from ratings and rankingorganizations.Coordinates MAA’s responses to investor, customer, and other stakeholder requests for ESG information.

  • Monitors trends in environmental science, renewable resources, sustainable work processes, and other diverse fields.Maintains awareness of ESG emerging trends and best practices to ensure delivery of best-in-class reporting.

  • Plans and implements programs to improve the economic, social, and/or environmental quality of life in the community (e.g., communityinvolvement/volunteering, company/employee giving, environmental improvements). Coordinates community outreach to promote the organization’s image in a positive and community-oriented way (internal events, fairs, and other community events).

  • Assists with other corporate governance and compliance matters.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field and ten (10) years of experience in ESG programs and projects, investor relations, or related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Supervisory/management experience required

Preferred Qualifications

  • ESG/sustainability reporting and disclosure experience strongly preferred

  • MBA or other Master’s degree preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of ESG concepts, practices, and programs

  • Quantitative analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Business and financial acumen

  • Knowledge and skills to manage projects, organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines

  • Written and verbal communication skills, including delivering presentations

  • Skill in applying critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving methods with strong attention to detail and precision

  • Ability to operate independently and collaboratively within a team

  • Ability to delegate tasks and manage the performance of others, including coaching, counseling, and development

  • Computer skills with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word)

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and maintain appropriate discretion
